About BurgerFuel
BurgerFuel BurgerFuel is a leader in the gourmet burger market, dedicated to serving high quality burgers in an atmosphere as charged as the food. Burgers range from 100% ground beef and chicken to moist fish varieties and vegetarian society approved patties. Combined with fun and irreverent marketing campaigns BurgerFuel creates the perfect environment for Franchisees to grow and enjoy their business.

Welcome to the history of BurgerFuel

Twelve years ago the world was caught lacking. The general populous had a need for something a little extra. A myriad of unexplainable events occurred, OJ got acquitted, Alanis Morissette established a successful singing career and the movie Showgirls were made.

The year 1995, destined for yet-to-be-invented, useless trivia websites, was saved from anonymity when the first BurgerFuel store was launched with arguably less hype, but possibly less bugs than
Microsoft’s Windows 95.

This concept store in Ponsonby Road introduced a gourmet burger with fresher and more natural ingredients delivered in an exciting environment conjured up from the images of flames, internal combustion and the desire to fuel and fire the human engine. The passion driving the products, people and promotions set BurgerFuel apart from anything else the world had seen before. Two years later, scientists in Scotland cloned their first sheep, Dolly, meanwhile
BurgerFuel frenetically engineered and cloned itself, opening its second store, Takapuna, in late 1997.

While partying like it was 1999, because it was 1999, BurgerFuel developed an industry leading kitchen system. BurgerFuel then blessed the new millennium by installing this custom engineered kitchen in Parnell, its third store. The new design was an instant success. Completely Y2K compliant, the new BurgerFuel kitchen had the ability to cook and deliver a Bastard (or any other burger) to customers within an 8-10 minute time frame, even during peak periods – a feat virtually unheard of in the gourmet segment. This Bastard to customer delivery timeframe eliminated a major bottleneck in the system and ensured that BurgerFuel could boost sales and achieve its full potential, even in international markets.

BurgerFuel then reached a further milestone in selling the Takapuna store to its first franchisees. This store immediately fulfilled its promise, to the extent that in early 2001 the same group of franchisees opened their second store in Mt Eden.

In 2002, BurgerFuel switched its focus to more humanitarian efforts, rectifying the universal
imbalance created by the breakup of NSync when it opened its first store outside of Auckland in
Hamilton, the city of the future. BurgerFuel has since invested considerable time and resources into its franchisee programme, perfecting and documenting selection, training, site procurement, store launch and general operating procedures.

Since deploying an aggressive store rollout plan in 2003 BurgerFuel has quickly spread across the North Island and entered the Australian market with its first store in Sydney’s Newtown, growing 300% from 5 stores to a 20 store system.

In twelve years, BurgerFuel has made incredible achievements, created through the development and promotion of a desirable product range and the successful marketing of the BurgerFuel brand.

BurgerFuel has taken over the New Zealand gourmet burger category, exploding on the scene like a furious burger machine - and we think this is just the beginning.

The Franchisees

Nothing sets BurgerFuel apart from the rest more than our people do. Sure, we believe our burgers are better than everyone else’s, but we think it’s our people who really set us apart. Our Franchisees are perhaps our biggest fans, they all loved BurgerFuel so much that they bought their own franchises. They each add their own personality, passion and energy to the BurgerFuel organisation.

Over the last decade, an extensive franchise system has been developed, with all aspects
of company operations fully documented. This business offers Franchisees the opportunity to
work within a challenging environment, coping with considerable demands, but with the potential to achieve exceptional benefits in terms of personal development and financial returns. All Franchisees work in their stores, getting to know their customers and running small promotions, which is a large part of why our stores are so successful. Some of our Franchisees have even opened their second BurgerFuel stores.

Our franchising ethic is to only accept the most appropriate franchisee, they have to be BurgerFuel people. Unlike other companies, for us, money is not the only consideration in issuing a BurgerFuel franchise. Prior to working trial shifts in stores, all applicants are thoroughly screened and interviewed on numerous occasions. This has the effect of ensuring that only fully committed, driven, motivated individuals are granted a BurgerFuel franchise. By implementing rigorous selection criteria and not compromising on standards, only people of the highest calibre are appointed. This has proven invaluable in maintaining our premium, quality image in the market place whilst ultimately reducing operational management time.

When a Franchisee purchases the right to operate a BurgerFuel store in a specific location, they receive a turn key operation from initial Franchisee training to a fully built store. This includes comprehensive manuals and systems detailing the operation of their business, as well as on-going Franchisor support. For this right to operate, they pay up-front fees and then on-going royalty and advertising fees.

There are essentially two store formats, dependant on the anticipated store volume in the proposed location. In New Zealand, the construction cost of a small to medium sized store is approximately $300,000 - $350,000 with larger stores costing approximately $350,000 - $500,000 per store. The Australian construction costs are estimated to be similar to New Zealand, but in Australian dollars. The Franchisee is wholly responsible for the construction costs of their store.

What We're Of

Our ingredients have been developed to our own exclusive recipes and are made to our specific requirements. BurgerFuel is continually looking for healthy wholesome ingredients free from artificial flavours, colours, preservatives, additives, and GE modification. We don’t just make burgers, we design, engineer, and construct them with an undying passion and commitment to perfection.

We use 100% ground beef, our chicken is butterfly cut for safe cooking and we always choose fleshy fish varieties that retain moistness and flavour. Our vegetarian patties are cooked separately and are Vegetarian Society approved with the ‘V Tick’ in both New Zealand and Australia. Whether it’s our organic Teriyaki-marinated tofu or our vegan patties blended with cashew nut butter, we strive to use 100% natural ingredients.

Our relish is made from real tomatoes using our own special recipe, free from preservatives,
colours or artificial flavouring. Our famed garlic aioli is made daily from fresh egg yolk, crushed
organic garlic and vegetable oil, blended into a thick creamy mayonnaise, free from artificial
flavours, additives or preservatives. Whatever it is, we always strive for quality and natural flavour over processed and convenient.

We offer monthly burger specials using different and unusual ingredients to provide variety and
adventure to the world’s burger connoisseurs. Our ever popular selection of unique accompaniments includes kumara chips, malt shakes and our own Frostbite mean ice-cream. Our business model allows us to change and adapt quickly, taking advantage of new ideas whether they come from us or from our customers. We develop those ideas and then we apply our knowledge and expertise to deliver the best product possible to our customers.

People choose BurgerFuel because life’s too short to eat bad burgers.
