Throughout his career he has built a motivated, fiercely loyal and long-term team of National Support Office staff and consultants. He is personable, as at home trading stories with a bar-rail of battlers in a country hotel as he is trading commercial wisdom with Australia's Prime Minister (who has a healthy respect for him). He has a thorough understanding of the franchising dichotomy. He is a retailer and service provider first and foremost, using franchising as a business method. The role of the franchisor team is to continue making franchisees' tills ring louder, longer and brighter.

John stepped into franchising not long after completing his university degree, he was an early corporate star when Cadbury Schweppes tasked him with converting hundreds of soft drink home-delivery drivers into franchisees. He soon took the Australian Capital Territory master licence for himself, followed by the states of Western Australia and Queensland.

This was the genesis of a career in franchising which going on 25 years later, sees O'Brien as one of the most respected identities in the sector – currently Vice President of the Franchise Council of Australia and hand-picked by Government to sit on the ACCC Franchise Consultative Panel.

John is a highly experienced, professional and reputable businessperson – certainly one of Australia's most expert in the application of franchising to disorganised and fragmented business sectors. And he is also what Australians call 'fair dinkum' - meaning direct, honest and down to earth.
